The
fruit from this species produce palm oil. Originally
from West
Africa but planted by the millions in tropical countries to satisfy
commercial demand, it is sometimes seen as a threat by
conservationists because it is replacing rainforests. It grows to 70
ft (21 m) high with fronds up to 8 ft (2.4 m) long. The
all-important fruit occur in large, tightly packed bunches and
change from red to black when ripe.
Cultivation: A warm, humid, tropical climate is necessary to grow
these plants outdoors, though they may be container grown indoors in
temperate zones. Plant in rich, moist soil in full sun. They are
tender to both frost and dry conditions. Propagate from seed. |
