Native to India, Indonesia and southern and tropical Africa, these 60 species of popular and resilient evergreen perennials are grown for their stiff, fleshy, patterned 1224 in (3060 cm) tall leaves. Stems of greenish white, slightly fragrant flowers appear in late spring in warm conditions. In Africa the fibers are used to make hemp.
